Kuang Si Waterfall is the biggest and most beautifull waterfall what we have seen so far. We had perfect day in Kuang Si Waterfall. This was for us highligh of Luang Prabang visit. How to get there? You can join tuk tuk group and pay around 50000 Kips per person. Or as we did, you can rent a motorbike and drive 29 km south of Luang Prabang.

Tat Kuang Si legend

According to one local legend, Kuang Si falls were formed when a wise oldman revealed the water of the Nam Si by digging deep into the earth. After the waters came to Kuang Si a beautiful golden deer made its home under a big rock that protruded from the falls. The sound of waterfalling on this rock created an enchanting echo that drew people to the waterfall from as far away as China. Tat Kuang Si gets its name from this legend. “Tat” meaning waterfall, “Kuang”, meaning deer and “Si” meaning dig. You can’t see the big rock though as it fell away in December, 2001 after a small earthquake.

When you arrive at Kuang Si you’ll meet black bears following rescue from poachers. There is also note not to buy traditional medicine which uses bear bile for questionable health benefits anc can actually cause you harm. Because of this medicine bears spend entire life in cage and will be killed as soon as it stops producing bile to make medicine.

Why is the water blue?

The water flows over many limestone rocks on its journey from the spring, over the main falls and then the stepped travertine cascades. Limestone particles, containing high levels of calcium carbonare, collected along the way reflect light making the watter appear to us as a stunning turquoise blue color.

We spent there 3 hours and after had lunch outside in local street food restaurant. Or you can make a picnic day and use tables and shelters located close to pools.
